Our main goal has always been research in biological physics, including the primary processes of photosynthesis. Therefore, the initial method-based laboratory name was in 22.04.2005 changed to the present subject-based name of biophysics. We also participate in applied research programs via international networks like the ESF COST D35 Working Group 0015-05 project called "Design and function of self-assembled light-energy conversion devices".
We have/have had scientific co-operations with laboratories from Australia, Belarus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the U.S.A.
Education of the students of the Faculty of Science and Technology is an increasingly important part of our activities. Biophysics programs available for the Masters level physics and biology students have first set in starting from the 2008/2009 academic year. Via occasional public lectures and media appearances we increase awareness of the Estonian society about modern biophysical ideas. A few examples can be found here: Mis on biofüüsika (in Estonian), Kõige Tähtsam energeetika (in Estonian), Füüsikapäevad 2007 (in Estonian).
